Rome was founded in 753 BC — making it over 2,770 years old. At its peak, the Roman Empire ruled 45 million people across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
So many words we use in English, science, law, and medicine come from Latin — the language of ancient Rome. Words like "animal," "bonus," "exit," "junior," and "video" are all Latin.
About €1.5 million in coins are thrown into the Trevi Fountain every year. They are cleaned out regularly and the money goes to a charity that feeds the poor in Rome.
Rome has an unusual resident: thousands of stray cats live in the ancient ruins — especially around the Colosseum and the Forum. They are protected by law and fed by volunteers.
The Romans built over 80,000 kilometres of roads across their empire — from Scotland to the Sahara. Many modern European roads still follow the same routes the Romans built.
