Plants & Growing

Plants don't eat dinner โ€” they make their own food from sunlight, water and air. Give a plant what it needs and watch it grow tall and green.
Scene 1

What does a plant need? ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ’ง

A plant needs sunlight, water and soil to grow. Slide the sun and the water and watch the plant change. Too little and it wilts; too much water and it droops and rots!

๐Ÿชด Soil
Find the happy middle! A bit of sun and a bit of water makes a tall green plant. No soil and it can't stand up at all.
Scene 2

The parts of a plant ๐ŸŒฟ

Each part has a job. Tap a part of the plant (or a button) to find out what it does.

The leaves are the plant's "kitchen" โ€” they catch sunlight to cook up food.

โญ Level Up

Brain stretch

1. Why does a plant left in a dark cupboard go pale and yellow? With no light, it can't make food in its leaves, and the green colour fades. It grows weak and yellow as it runs out of energy.

2. What do leaves use sunlight for? Making food! Leaves use sunlight, water and air to make their own food โ€” that's how plants feed themselves.

3. Put the life cycle in order: plant, seed, flower, seedling. Seed โ†’ seedling โ†’ plant โ†’ flower โ†’ (new seeds, and round it goes again!).

4. Can a plant grow with no water at all โ€” and why? No. Water is one of the things a plant needs to make food and stay firm. With no water it dries out, droops and dies.

The Big Idea

Plants make their own food ๐Ÿƒ

Plants are amazing โ€” they don't go hunting or grazing. Using sunlight, water and air, their leaves make their own food.

Give a plant the right amount of light and water, plant it in good soil, and it will grow from a tiny seed into a flower full of new seeds. Get the balance right and it thrives.
