Skill 4 ยท Be Safe

Water Safety

Pool, sea, river, bathtub โ€” water is fun, but it has rules. Knowing them keeps you (and your friends) alive.
Scene 1 ยท The first three rules

Always, every time, no exceptions

  1. Never swim alone. Always with a grown-up who can swim and is watching you, not on a phone.
  2. If a sign says "No swimming" or "Danger" โ€” believe it. Adults wrote it because someone got hurt there.
  3. Wear a life jacket on boats, even if you can swim. Boats can flip in seconds.
Scene 2 ยท Different waters, different rules

Each kind of water has its own surprise

๐ŸŠ
Pool
No running on the wet edges. Never push someone in. Always check there's an adult watching before getting in.
๐ŸŒŠ
Sea / beach
Stay between the safety flags. Watch out for waves and rip currents. Don't turn your back to the sea.
๐Ÿž๏ธ
River / lake
Cold underneath, even when sunny. Slippery rocks. Hidden currents. Only swim where you've been told it's safe.
๐Ÿ›
Bath
Even an inch of water is enough for a small child to drown. Never leave a younger sibling alone in the bath, even for a minute.
Scene 3 ยท Rip currents

If the sea pulls you out โ€” swim sideways, not back

A rip current is like a river inside the sea, pulling water away from the beach. If you feel pulled out, do not swim straight back to shore โ€” you'll get exhausted.

  1. Stay calm. Don't fight it.
  2. Wave one arm and shout for help.
  3. Float on your back. Let the current take you out a bit.
  4. Then swim parallel to the beach โ€” sideways โ€” until you're out of the rip. Then swim in.
Scene 4 ยท If a friend is in trouble

Reach. Throw. Don't go.

If you see someone struggling in water, your first instinct is to jump in and save them. Don't. They might pull you under without meaning to.

REACH ๐Ÿคฒ

Hold something out โ€” a stick, a towel, a pool noodle, your hand if they're really close. Lie on your tummy so they can't pull you in.

THROW ๐Ÿ›Ÿ

Throw something that floats โ€” a life ring, a rope, a ball, an empty plastic bottle.

DON'T GO โŒ

Don't jump in unless an adult tells you to. Run get an adult now.

Scene 5 ยท Floating on your back

The most useful skill in water

If you ever fall in and can't touch the bottom: float on your back. Tilt your head back so your ears are in the water. Spread your arms out. Breathe slowly. You can stay up that way for a long time, even fully clothed.

Practising "starfish floating" in a pool is the most boring-looking superpower โ€” and one of the most useful.

Scene 6 ยท Bright clothes save lives

Wear a colour the lifeguard can find

If something goes wrong in the water, the person on the shore needs to see you. Most pool and beach water is blue or green โ€” and most people wear dark or pale swimwear that disappears against it.

Pick something loud: bright orange, hot pink, neon yellow. The brighter the better. It's not about looking fancy โ€” it's about being easy to spot from a long way off.

โ˜… Best
Bright orange
โ˜… Best
Hot pink
โ˜… Good
Neon yellow
OK
Bright green
Hard to see
Dark blue
Worst
Black

A bright rash-vest sleeve, a coloured swim cap, or even a neon hairband will do. Lifeguards still need to be looking โ€” but bright colours give them a fighting chance.

โ˜… The big idea

Water doesn't get angry โ€” it just doesn't care

Water isn't trying to hurt you. It's just there, doing what water does. Your job is to know its moods and respect them.

Always with a grown-up. Reach, throw, don't go. And float when in doubt.
