Skill 6 ยท Be Smart

Road Safety

In Saigon, the streets are busy. Here's how to cross like someone who's been doing it for years.
Scene 1 ยท Stop. Look. Listen.

Three things, every time

STOP
๐Ÿ›‘
At the kerb. Not in the road. Both feet on the pavement.
LOOK
๐Ÿ‘€
Right, then left, then right again. (Vietnam drives on the right.)
LISTEN
๐Ÿ‘‚
For motorbikes, horns, engines. Sometimes you hear them before you see them.

If anything's coming, wait. The road is patient. So are we.

Scene 2 ยท The traffic lights

Three colours, three meanings

CARS STOP
YOU GO
GET READY
WAIT
CARS GO
YOU WAIT

For pedestrians (people walking) the colours can be flipped โ€” green walking person = go; red person = stop. Look for the picture.

Even with a green light, look both ways. Some drivers don't stop. Trust your eyes more than the colour.

Scene 3 ยท Crossing in Saigon

The 'walking through a stream' rule

HCMC traffic doesn't always stop, even at zebra crossings. Motorbikes flow around obstacles. The trick is to walk slowly, steadily, predictably โ€” like a stone in a stream. Drivers will go around you.

  1. Hold a grown-up's hand. Always.
  2. Don't sprint. Don't stop. Walk steady.
  3. Make eye contact with the closest driver โ€” they'll see you.
  4. Watch out for left-turning traffic โ€” it can come from behind.
Scene 4 ยท On a motorbike or in a car

Helmets and seatbelts โ€” every time

Scene 5 ยท Walking and watching

Eyes up, ears free

Don't walk while looking at a screen. Don't wear headphones near roads (or only on one ear). The pavement isn't always safe either โ€” motorbikes sometimes ride on it. Stay close to the wall side, not the road side.

At night, wear something light or reflective. Drivers can't stop for what they can't see.

โ˜… The big idea

The road is a living thing โ€” pay attention

Bikes, cars, buses, scooters โ€” they're all big and fast and not paying as much attention as you are. Your job is to be predictable and be visible.

Stop, look, listen. Helmet on. Hand held.
