Lesson 13 · Science

The Solar System

One star, eight planets, dozens of moons. We live on the third one — Earth.
Scene 1

Tap each one 🪐

Our solar system is the Sun and everything that orbits it. The Sun is huge — it's a star. The eight planets all spin around it, each in its own giant circle (called an orbit).

Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune

Scene 2

How big? How far? 📏

If the Sun were a beach ball, the Earth would be the size of a pea — and it would be 24 metres away. Most of space is empty space.

The Sun is so big that 1.3 million Earths could fit inside it. And the Sun is just an average-sized star. Some are 1,000 times bigger.

The Big Idea

Tiny blue dot 🌍

Earth is the only planet we know of that has life. Out of every place in our solar system — boiling Mercury, freezing Neptune, the giant gassy Jupiter — only this one round, blue, watery, mostly-mild ball has trees, animals, you, and Tết.

Look after it.
